Cybersecurity And Your eCommerce Business

If you’ve ever responded to a report on cybersecurity by thinking, “but that doesn’t mean me, no one cares about my small eCommerce business,” then you might be the very person (or company) needing cybersecurity the most.

Although small eCommerce businesses may not have much data to take, they’re often easy targets for cyber criminals because they fail to protect themselves. Although it’s no reason to panic, you should be thinking more seriously about protecting your eCommerce business starting today.

Why You Should be Concerned

If you have little to protect, then what’s the point of implementing time consuming cybersecurity policies and protections? The truth is that it’s not always just about data, you’re also putting your reputation at stake.

These are a few ways a good cybersecurity plan helps you:

  • Safeguarding your customers. Above all else, it’s vital that you protect customer data, even if you only store addresses and phone numbers. A clever cyber criminal can use this small amount of data to steal an identity or access other accounts that aren’t secured well. Your customers deserve your protection, especially when they’ve trusted you so much with their personal information.
  • Protecting your reputation. Besides being perceived as the company that let hackers just waltz off with credit card numbers and customer data, a cyber attack can give people the idea that you’re not on top of your game. Cleaning up the aftermath is time consuming and can interrupt eCommerce order fulfillment, resulting in slow or out of window deliveries that infuriate customers.
  • Sending a message to cyber criminals. When you leave the door open for hackers, they’re encouraged to find more open doors. But when they knock and knock and knock and there’s no one letting them in, it becomes more trouble to steal data than it’s worth. This strategy can only work if you and everyone else participates in the thwarting of criminal activity. It’s a little bit like a neighborhood watch, but for your entire eCommerce business community.

Cybersecurity is serious business, but even if you’re not on the cutting-edge, it’s not too late. The time to get a plan of action is now, this will help safeguard your future and the future of your organization.

No matter the size of your business, there’s something that a criminal is interested in taking, it’s better to be safe than to be regretting inaction later.
