Getting Started In eCommerce: What’s Important (Part 3 of 3)

This is part three in a three-part series. You can read part one here and part two here.

In the first two parts of this three-part series, we went over the tools you needed and the partners that will help you find early success with your eCommerce business, but we’ve not yet touched on those things that are most important in running an online shop. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s easy to lose focus.

As your business comes online and expands, it’s vital that you keep a few things in mind. Not every day will be your best day, but these truths will help keep you on track:

  1. Packages don’t always arrive on time. Despite you and your 3rd party logistics company’s attention to detail and care in packaging, sometimes packages won’t make it to their destination. Transport vehicles may have accidents, packages might get lost at shipping terminals or delivery drivers simply don’t deliver them properly. Unfortunately, things happen, so be prepared with a plan to replace lost packages.
  1. Not every customer is a happy customer. No matter what you do, some people won’t be happy. This is no reason to give them poor service or to disregard their concerns, though. Treat every customer how you’d like to be treated, even if they’re not doing you the same courtesy. If you find you can’t deal with customers effectively, it might be a good idea to ask your full service logistics company if they have a call center available to answer customer inquiries.
  1. Data tracking can grow your business, but only if you use it properly. You can have every data tracking tool monitoring your sales and traffic, but if you don’t take the appropriate actions, that data is useless. Carefully review your data and ask a lot of questions if you don’t understand how it can improve your sales. If you’re really stuck, or numbers aren’t your thing, hire a consultant to help.
  1. Driving traffic to your site is a daily effort. SEO and social media marketing aren’t set it and forget it types of marketing. In fact, you’ll be constantly working to anticipate the newest search trends and communicating with your customers via social media if you really want to make your eCommerce successful. Take a little time every day to work on your online marketing plan or hire someone who can. Without proper placement, you might as well close shop because no one will be able to find you online.
  1. Customers always need more information. Your photographs and descriptions of products need to be absolutely top notch and leave no room for any questions. For example, if a customer sees a shirt on your site that they’re interested in purchasing, they should be able to quickly see what sort of material it’s made of, how it’s supposed to fit, what sizes are available and enough photographs to be able to envision themselves wearing it.

Breathing an eCommerce business to life isn’t an easy undertaking, but once you’re fully launched, you may find that it’s the only thing you can imagine yourself doing. Turning a passion into a career is the dream of many, though few find a way to make it happen. Now that you know what to look for, what you need and what’s important, your eCommerce business will be set for success.
